Volunteering with us in Malawi

Are you interested in volunteering in Africa? Are you looking for a new challenge and a change of scenery? Do you have knowledge and skills you’d like to share with one of the poorest parts of Africa? Phunzira is constantly looking for vibrant and enthusiastic individuals to join our project in Ruarwe and WE DO NOT CHARGE!

Malawi is a beautiful country with a reputation for its friendly people and safe surroundings. Ruarwe is a remote village along the lake in an area of incredible natural beauty and it is both a challenging and rewarding place to work. There is no charge for volunteering with Phunzira and we offer free accommodation at the beautiful Zulunkhuni River Lodge where there are plenty of exotic birds and fish to keep you entertained. We do not have set requirements for how long you join us (although we recommend at least 1 month in view of how remote Ruarwe is and how much you’ll enjoy living there!)

There are numerous opportunities for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We are looking for help with education, health, construction work, carpentry, gardening and recreational activities. The overall focus of our project is to create a healthy and happy environment for everyone to learn and develop skills for sustainable living. We are therefore interested in passionate and creative individuals, so please don’t hesitate to contact us even if you feel you don’t have a specific skill set.

Education, Life Skills & Recreation

We are looking for teachers in Maths, Science and English as well as innovative people to run youth groups, art classes, sports sessions and play groups.

As a rural community who rely heavily on the land for nutrition and income generation, we are increasingly aware of how fragile our world is. We must look after our land in a sustainable and productive way and therefore we are looking for people with any expertise or interest in farming, fishing and renewable energy.

We are always building as part of our project. It is important to us to use locally sourced resources and build in tune with the land, climate and community. We are looking for engineers, carpenters, architects and anyone interested in getting their hands dirty!

Health

Ruarwe health centre was able to reopen in 2011 thanks to Phunzira's health initiative. This rural clinic serves a large area with a population estimate between 2000 and 5000. Around a third of patients seen in the clinic are under 5 years and an increasing number of consultations are related to antenatal care. Malaria, chest infections and diarrhoeal disease are common. The clinic is a vital part of the community and provides an essential service.

We are looking for doctors, nurses, dentists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and anyone else who feels they have skills to offer. We welcome health professionals at all levels of training and specialisation who would like to share their knowledge and expertise. We also welcome students as this is a wonderful place to learn and share skills and ideas. Our health co-ordinator Dr Angel is currently working on site and can provide medical supervision.

Phunzira adopts a community-driven holistic approach and we feel that prevention rather cure is an important focus. We are therefore looking for volunteers to get involved in educational workshops to raise awareness and promote good health.
